What We Need

Codeword is a fast growing hybrid creative agency that goes beyond conventional communications.  We are creative strategists, content experts, and media hackers with offices in San Francisco, New York, and Salt Lake City.  

 

Our NY office has an immediate opening for a self-motivated Senior Account Executive. This is the perfect opportunity for a PR pro with at least 3 years of experience who can work alongside account leads to handle clients, and wants to work with exec, peer and junior staff as equals.

 

You are a storyteller that knows how to crack media across a variety of different verticals and mediums – and you’ve got the clips to prove it. Your Rolodex with reporters is robust, resulting in an impressive repertoire of tech, business, consumer, niche and broadcast media placements that support a client’s business objectives. You love deadlines and working under pressure (because clients), and have a passion for the way technology is influencing every facet of daily life.

What you'll be doing

  • Co-piloting accounts with the account leads to stay the course of providing long-term value to clients; executing day-to-day account activities that are integral to the health of the campaign
  • Leading the first drafts of creative work and supporting the generation of out-of-the-box ideas; additionally, supervising junior staff on all client-facing written work
  • Proactively developing hard-hitting story angles that regularly turn into high-impact media results for clients
  • Overseeing implementation and development of reporting and analytics for clients on a regular basis
  • Actively developing press results and relationships through networking and smart pitching
  • Representing WE Codeword at industry and client events, further building your network
  • Begin developing an arsenal of skills outside of traditional media placements, including, but not limited to, developing integrated campaigns across WE Codeword’s paid, owned and earned teams (existing experience here is a plus!)
  • Be an integral part of a small, quickly growing and evolving team in NY

 

This position will evolve and expand over time as the company grows. You’ll be part of the New York PR team and report to the SVP, PR.  The ideal candidate must be able to write, be interested in technology, and want to work on-site in our New York office.

What you've been able to accomplish

  • A writer. We only hire strong writers. If you are articulate and can express yourself intelligently, we want you. If you can explain something complex to a journalist in three sentences or less, we want you.
  • A person who knows people, and how to engage those people. We want them to like you and respect you (liking you is optional). Specifically, you know the media, and they know you. You know entrepreneurs. You live for the startup world. And you love it.
  • An idea person / An execution person. Creative enough to think big, humble and hard-working enough to execute WELL on a tactical level.
  • A person who has a passion for technology. You have solid experience in tech + b2b. Consumer lifestyle experience is a plus!
  • An entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs know there is no “off” switch, so we need people that can always be “on.” Even when it isn’t convenient. We don’t punch a clock here, but do (try to) track the hours we’re spending on an account – and we manage our time ruthlessly because we have to.
  • Experience. We need someone that has done this before. A few times. You aren’t an executive (yet), but you know how to run a PR program, and you’ve been around long enough to know the press – and more importantly, they know you.
  • A manager. We need someone that can manage up and down. We’re slammed… all the time… which is a good thing, but nothing can fall through the cracks. That means you manage the team, but you keep those above you in the loop on important information.
  • A problem solver. We need someone that asks the right questions, finds the answers out themselves, and then presents the problem with some recommended solutions.

Additional Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in PR agencies, in-house or corporate communications (at least one of those years in an agency)
  • Strong, established business, tech and consumer press relationships
  • Team-oriented attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever needed
  • Desire to keep learning and advance within the agency
  • Creativity and integrity, we are a PR agency, after all
  • Ability to be strategic and work well under pressure
  • Motivated, enthusiastic self-starter able to complete tasks with minimal supervision, which also means you’re both ambitious and flexible
  • Strong communications skills (both verbal and written)
  • Startup experience is a plus or you’re just super comfortable with a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, plus you’ve never met a Google app or doc you don’t know how to use
  • A bachelor’s degree or relevant experience
