WE Communication is one of the largest independent communications and integrated marketing agency’s in the world with 24 offices globally and more than 1,300 people who love bringing communications to the next level. With an office based in Illovo, Sandton, we are keen to bolster our ranks with a junior hire to help expand our offering and support existing key integrated client(s).

 

We have an open role for a first-rate PR/Comms professional looking for a 6 month FTC (with the possibility of extension) to oversee the management of a number of our established global technology, consumer and B2B brands; providing insightful client counsel, a deep understanding of the local media landscape and a passion for business writing.  No two days are the same and this a great opportunity for a solid Media Relations Specialist to join a very talented, super-collaborative and committed team, working on a great mix of B2B and B2C clients.

 

Key strengths for this role include a ‘can do’ attitude, content creation with a focus on attention to detail, media relations and an understanding of the local media landscape. This includes having your pulse on media movements and targeted pitching. Most of all you must also be passionate about working in an organisation that moves audiences to positive action.

You should have a solid understanding of PR and digital, how a PR agency integrates both into a cohesive working strategy.  You will be working with a fantastic Account Director, who will invest time and energy in your own development and career progression. 

What you'll be doing at WE

  • Day-to-day support of client management team–this includes quick turnaround on client team requests and management of expectations around deadlines and scope of work
  • Manage the agency’s media contact list (in accordance with POPIA regulations) – ensuring it is updated and current at all times
  • Develop and nurture strong working relationships with journalists from a broad range of publications, websites and other media channels
  • Mentor junior team members regarding media liaison best practice
  • Tailor content appropriate to different media and social media channels, and pitch news stories across diverse sectors including consumer, tech and transportation
  • Working closely with colleagues to ensure we make the most of all opportunities
  • Proactively source media opportunities for clients
  • Media strategy and campaign development
  • Media execution – across national, business, consumer and technology medial landscape
  • Team leadership – supporting Account Director to manage account teams and act as mentor to our junior teams
  • Working with account teams to run integrated (traditional and digital) campaigns
  • Development of regular ‘smaller campaign’ plans as well as overall client strategy
  • Story generation – helping to brainstorm ideas to generate coverage for clients

What you've been able to accomplish

  • 4+ years experience - preferably within a PR/Comms agency
  • Experience of working in a press or media relations role with a deep understanding of how to manage press enquiries and journalists
  • Established contacts with a range of journalists and excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • Experience of working across very technical clients, with the ability to seamlessly transition to more consumer-orientated clients
  • Experience of both B2B and B2C, across multiple sectors
  • Proven track record of delivering successful campaigns
  • A creative approach to identifying and managing content, and willing and able to take responsibility, use initiative and judgement
